Anthony's Eyece Breaker Story:

"A couple of years ago I was at Costco with one of my aunts, happily making my way through one of my favorite parts of the entire store, the sample stations. 😂 Now listen, I’m not one of those people who turns Costco samples into a full buffet experience… but I’m also not about to disrespect a free turkey meatball. So there we were somewhere near the towering kingdom of toilet paper and paper towels when I heard the sample lady cheerfully inviting people over to try her turkey meatballs. As my aunt started chatting with her, I reached out carefully to get my bearings. I could feel the sample cart, the little paper cups, the toothpicks sticking out of the tops… success was within reach. Then suddenly my forearm brushed against something. Something large. Something apparently very important. The next thing I heard was a loud crash, gasps from nearby shoppers, and my Guide Dog making the kind of enthusiastic movement that can only mean: “FATHER… THE SKY HAS RELEASED MEATBALLS.” 😂 Mortified does not even begin to cover it. Turns out I had accidentally knocked over the container holding the backup supply of turkey meatballs waiting to refill the tray. Meanwhile my dog was absolutely convinced this was the greatest day in Costco history. To her credit, the sample lady could not have been sweeter. While starting to clean up the disaster, she still handed me a sample cup and laughed, “Well… I guess dinner came early for your dog.” Honestly, somewhere deep in that Costco, I’m still emotionally paying for those meatballs."

Beyond the Story:

What's an activity or hobby that you refuse to give up doing, despite the changes to or loss of your vision?

" I absolutely refuse to give up watching my soap operas… Even though they do not have audio description, I have been hooked since I was three years old and blindness ain’t taken that away from me."

What’s something that living with vision loss has taught you about yourself?

"I am stronger than I think more resilient than I believed and fun both in the dark and the light."

What’s a moment, related to your vision, that still makes you laugh?

" No matter how many times I condition myself to put my keys in the same space on the hallway table 5 times out of 10 when I go to leave I need to spend another five minutes searching for where did I actually put the Keys?"

When speaking about your vision, what’s something people are usually surprised to learn about your day-to-day life?

"I still find it funny that so many people are amazed that I can shave myself without costing myself, serious bodily injury."

What’s one misconception about your vision that you wish people knew and/or would let go of?

"That because I’m blind, I must know every other blind person in my county, state or the world."

With your diagnosis in mind, what’s one “rare perspective” you’ve gained?

"There is so much that we see with our eyes that we take for granted and so much information that we bypass because of our eyes, but really seeing someone doesn’t happen with eyeballs. It’s with a heart."

A Little More From Anthony:

"Even through difficult seasons in life, I’ve tried to continue creating meaningful conversations and supporting others in the blind and low-vision community. Through projects like The Sunday Edition podcast and other digital media work, I’ve found purpose in highlighting voices, building connections, and contributing something positive where I can.
